FLEURIEU PENINSULA & KANGAROO ISLAND

REVIEW:
FLEURIEU PENINSULA & KANGAROO ISLAND (2010)

The Fleurieu Peninsula covers the area south of the southern suburbs of Adelaide and east to Lake Alexandrina. The sub-regions covered are McLaren Vale, Southern Fleurieu and Langhorne Creek. McLaren Vale is such a substantial wine area that it has been allocated a separate regional guide - McLAREN VALE.

Southern Fleurieu covers the beautiful coastline and rich countryside that supports some scattered vineyard areas cooler than McLaren Vale, rich dairy and pastoral country. While not as concentrated an area for wine or food it offers much that is worth investigating. The southern coastline - facing towards the Southern Ocean - has the seaside gems of Port Elliott and Goolwa.

The south-east corner of the Fleurieu, above Lake Alexandrina and affected by its maritime climate, is Langhorne Creek, one of the largest quality wine producing areas in Australia. This may seem unusual as, for many years, there were very few cellar doors here; the wine being shipped to other areas for blending or bottling. But recent years has seen the establishment of more labels with cellar doors open to the public, and a very vibrant local winemakers association promoting it. Langhorne Creek has produced more Jimmy Watson trophy-winners than any other area, and the reds from here are sexy seducers from a young age.

Kangaroo Island is a gem that was ignored even by Adelaideans until relatively recent times but is a contrast of unspoiled beaches and recent vineyard development, with accompanying small to luxury accommodation to cater for visitors for both.
