REVIEW:
Although without the public profile of the Barossa, the Clare Valley, only another half hour drive north, is one of the most picturesque, premium wine-producing areas in Australia. Surrounding the road from Auburn to Clare itself is beautiful countryside covered in vineyards, heritage cottages and stunning restored country homes. The Riesling Trail meanders around this north-south road and makes a gentle cycling discovery tour that shows the Clare at its best.
Clare is home to some of Australia's finest rieslings, the best of which can age for a decade - or even two - to great advantage. Not surprising riesling's siblings - gewurztraminer and pinot gris - also perform well, but semillon can also shine from some makers. Both shiraz and cabernet produce bold, sweet-fruited reds, while grenache works well in fragrant, lighter versions that should be given some respect. Oft-maligned malbec - most often in blends with shiraz or cabernet - can be a revelation here.
Food has lost some focus in recent years, and options for serious dining - especially at night - may limit you to your accommodation (Thorne Park is arguably the best dinner in the valley). Even a few decent casual options have closed although Wild Saffron continues offering a changing menu of very good regional fare. At the end of 2009 the underperforming Citadel has been replaced by Last Word so we live in hope.
Vineyard dining is lead by Skillogalee, although Reilly's in picturesque Mintaro have adopted a garden kitchen approach that should yield another quality option. We hope the new deck at the Knappstein Brewery will become a venue for an afternoon refresher.
But the Clare is worth the journey for its natural beauty, great riesling and enough good simple food to keep most happy.
