REVIEW:
The best Thai in Sydney? ... we think so, just sneaking past Sailors' Thai (the restaurant not the canteen) for that crown. But be warned: it is communal tables, and they are designed for the room not for your company; just too wide for any intimacy, but perfect for symmetry of the look and feel of the space. So it's better with more than two, although you can sit up to the bar a deux for more privacy. But the food is sensational, making most Thai restaurants look as pedestrian as they really are. And the wine list is carefully chosen to complement the food. This is a great Asian dining experience. Their market day on the third Sunday of each new season is worthy of a regular visit. |
Longrain is a contemporary restaurant and bar uniquely located within an expansive, 110 year-old converted warehouse. A hip, yet welcoming atmosphere is combined with warm service, original cocktails, an inspired wine list and award-winning, modern Thai/Asian food, created by executive chef, Martin Boetz. Longrain Sydney has just celebrated itýs 10th birthday.
Positioned within the heart of artistic design quarter of inner-city Surry Hills, Longrain is only minutes from Sydneyýs CBD and eastern suburbs-making it both a popular lunch and dinner destination for locals and visitors alike. Industrial features of the original warehouse co-exist with modern design additions, such as a signature wall of woven-wood paneling and a contemporary selection of Australian art and photography by celebrated artists such as Christopher Hodges.
The relaxed cocktail bar, with its long banquette, is home to resident DJs who create the perfect mood for lounging back and sipping cocktails. The caipiroska is Longrainýs signature cocktail and is often credited as the cocktail at the heart of the ýstick drinký revival. Other infamous in-house cocktails include the Ping pong, Camped Bitch and Bloody Longrain.
The dining room is dramatically divided by three enormous wooden communal dining tables. These are deliberately designed to encourage traditional ýAsian-styleý banquet dining. Executive chef Martin Boetzýs menu is a mouth-watering blend of Thai and Chinese influences with dishes that are designed to be shared. A wine list carefully created by fellow co-owner and award winning sommelier Sam Christie to perfectly balance the menuýs combination of hot, sour, salty and sweet flavours.

Longrain's bar is a chic, sexy space that oozes a Manhattan warehouse vibe.
A long banquette, molded plywood stools and chunky wooden tables creates a relaxed lounge bar atmosphere for the inner urbanites that flock here every night.
The bar menu, with its delicious morsels, compliments an extensive cocktail and wine list.
The infamous 'stick drink', a concoction of muddled fresh fruit, vodka and ice, that is pounded with an enormous wooden stick, is undoubtedly this crowd's favourite.

Every Tuesday - Saturday night, DJs mix a cool blend of Afro Latin beats, smoky dub lounge and jazzy breaks.
The vibe is relaxed and easy for conversation.

Co-owner and Sommelier Sam Christie has carefully put together a wine list that best compliments Boetz's Thai-style cooking.
The largely white dominated wine list, reflects Sam's belief that unwooded white varietals, with good acid balance and predominant flavours, provide the best foil to spicy food.
The Longrain wine list features Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, and lightly wooded, spicy reds such as Pinot Noir, Grenache and Shiraz.
