REVIEW:
This lovely building opposite the park houses a welcoming looking bar/restaurant area, with a small lounge bar space dominated by a log fire for Winter, and the dining area high-ceilinged, timbered and tall-windowed. It's had a history of decent and not-so-decent restaurants over the years but is now run by the next generation (Jacques) Reymond family. Flavours are those of modern France with forays into Spain, hence gitan, French for gypsy. The menu works for sharing, or flying solo, with a bistro structure, and puts a modern face on the classic format. Here we have a chef who under-seasons, and salt and pepper are not on tables unless asked for, so many dishes under-perform simply on that note. A Croque Monsieur with crab sounded so interesting it was an early grab but was so lacking in crab flavour that we opened it up to find ... only trace elements of crab. Execution failed in several other dishes but it's early days yet and, with the family heritage here, we'll check again soon. WINE: Not surprising that France has a strong representation but the list is fairly international with an interesting range by the glass.
