The Byron Farmers market began as a dream. An inspiration from local farmers, growers, environmentalists and families who wanted all the positive effects of a growers market in their area. A lot of hard work lobbying, liasing with council, market research and a fair amount of time later we have two very successful farmers markets in Byron shire.

The Byron Farmers Market is held every Thursday morning from 8-11 oclock and has been operating since December 2002.

With the success of Thursdays market as encouragement, in July 2004 the Byron Farmers Market Association started a Farmers Market in the neighbouring town Bangalow. This market is held every Saturday morning from 8-11. This market has 20 stalls with as much variety as the seasons allow, it has a lovely ambience & a growing following of regular customers.

The Byron Farmers Market Association has supplied many happy customers with a healthy grass root alternative. While the farmers involved have access to a rapidly growing market. The farmers market is an exercise in community based sustainable agriculture. It is also a place where people meet, where recipes are swapped, new exotic flavours tried, hints on successful gardening are shared and the weather and local issues are discussed.

Produce available changes with the seasons, but stables which can be enjoyed year round include: sugar cane juice freshly juiced on site, macadamia nuts and products including oils spreads & muesli. Delish smoked fish, prawns farmed in Ballina River, prime cuts of beef, pork raised in the hills behind Byron and made into bacon & sausages by a local butcher. Organically grown turkeys, chickens & their eggs. Coffee, breads, olives, honey, raw, creamed & in comb.

A range of condiments are available: including pestos, marinade, dressings, jams & chutneys.

Sprouted seeds & nuts add a healthy variety while wheat grass fresh & full of vitality is available with details of its use.

As the weather goes through its changes so does the range of fabulous flowers, fruits, vegetables herbs & spices. Always fresh and always well priced.

The Byron Shire is a place of huge social diversity and the farmers market has a unique place in our unusual community. Any funds raised at the market is put straight back into the local area. Weekly donations of top quality food are made to a local soup kitchen & youth service & regular food donations are made to the north coast wildlife carers. It has become a forum for ideas & petitions on environmental issues. It is a place where community groups can share information and raise funds for vital local services.

We have an ever-growing group of customers from all walks of life who come together on Thursday & Saturday mornings for the farmers' market experience. This is an experience which is satisfying for everyone, as farmers build a customer base the benefits are an ever widening circle of improvement to life on the land, in the kitchens throughout Byron Shire & the North coast region.
