History
The thriving Ferngrove Vineyards Estate at Frankland River in Western Australia's Great Southern wine region is a remarkable success story built on the vibrant dream of a prominent South Coast pioneer farming family. In 1996, with nearly 90 years of beef and dairy farming history behind him, Murray Burton decided to move into premium grape growing, knowing the region's productive soils, pristine environment and temperate Mediterranean climate were ideal for viticulture.
Planting Vines
Murray mortgaged the family farm at Walpole to purchase land to the north at Frankland River, one of Western Australia's coolest grape growing areas. In the following year, Frankland Valley Vineyard was established. From the outset, Murray set his sights on achieving world's best practice in viticulture, with the ultimate goal of producing premium wines of indisputable quality for the Australian and international markets. The commitment to quality paid off immediately. The vines thrived and more land was acquired just a few kilometres away, leading to the establishment of Ferngrove Vineyard in 1998. Development since then has been rapid, but carefully managed. A third vineyard, Vintage Park, was established at Frankland in 1999. In 2000, Murray's interests were extended to include Karri Oak Vineyard at Mt Barker.
Independent Admirers
Ferngrove Vineyards Estate has won critical acclaim for its commitment to high standards in viticulture. Curtin University of Technology viticulture lecturer, Dr Tom Crossen, described Ferngrove as setting a new standard:
"There's no doubt Ferngrove is a benchmark for the establishment of premium vineyards in Western Australia."
More recently, widely respected viticulture consultant, Di Davidson, gave her stamp of approval:
"The on-site management really must be congratulated on doing a very professional job."
Industry identities, international wine writers, wine agents and many others have also paid tribute to Ferngrove, underlining the outstanding achievements of Murray and his management team since they took those first brave steps in 1997.
A Modern Winery
A modern winery was established at Ferngrove in 1999 and produced its first commercial vintage in 2000. The tourism oriented winery features rammed earth buildings, corrugated iron roofing, wide verandahs, extensive use of local timber, a floor to ceiling glass wall to allow viewing of winery operations and a lookout tower with sweeping views of the spectacular Stirling Ranges.
The Dream Continues ...
For Murray Burton, the fullfilment of a dream has just begun. Murray will not believe he has succeeded until Ferngrove holds international status as one of Australia's great wine producers - a goal he, his management team and staff are determined to achieve sooner, rather than later.
