Canberra reds have been led by Clonakilla for several years but other high quality wineries are now showing similar style wines. One such is McKellar Ridge with very good shiraz and cabernets from recent vintages.

about McKellar Ridge -

McKellar Ridge, owned by Brian and Janet Johnston, is a business producing high quality wines from specially selected parcels of Canberra District grapes. The winery is located on Point of View Vineyard, 2 Euroka Avenue, Murrumbateman.

In the 2008 Australian Wine Companion, James Halliday rated the winery 4.5/5.0 stars "Excellent winery able to produce wines of high to very high quality, knocking on the door of a 5-star rating.

The wines are all hand-made, using traditional open ferment/pigeage methods for reds, but ensuring the application of modern winemaking techniques such as careful pH management and protective handling of the wines, using CO2 during transfers. These techniques were learned at Charles Sturt University, where Brian has been undertaking a post-graduate diploma in science, focussing on wine science and wine production techniques.

Grapes are principally sourced from Point of View Vineyard at Murrumbateman, but are also supplemented by other growers who focus on low yields, modern vine canopy management and disease control. Fruit is netted to protect from bird damage and to allow the time of picking to be determined by the best balance of sugars, acid and flavours, always with ripe seed tannins.

Fruit is hand-picked and taken immediately to the winery for processing. Acid additions are usually made at crushing and the must is also acid-adjusted to a target pH of 3.4 before fermentation. Malolactic fermentation of the red wines is encouraged to assist in stabilising the wine and to soften and integrate the wine in the barrel. Further acid adjustment may be during subsequent processing to keep the pH close to 3.6 in order to avoid microbial contamination of the wines. The red wine is matured in small, high quality french barriques, also with minimal handling, but with very regular pH checks, topping up and SO2 control.

Bottling is undertaken using a modern mobile bottling plant, that is able to provide screwcaps, labeling and the addition of CO2 to assist protect the wine in the bottle. McKellar Ridge has moved to screwcaps because of the technical superiority of the screwcap to protect the wine during storage and the avoidance of cork taint. As consumers become more aware of these advantages, greater acceptance of the screwcap is expected.
