Not a cellar door but roaming-source winemaker who is based in the Yarra Valley.
Mac Forbes makes wines chardonnay, cabernet and pinot noir from various individual vineyards across the Yarra Valley, and other varietals (including a couple of Italians) from the Strathbogies and King Valley. Only a couple of vintages have hit the market but what has shows exceptional promise for the future. The barbera is arguably the best of that variety I've tasted from Australian sources.
A winemaker to watch closely ...

Over the last 18 months I have embarked on an unforgettable adventure. And in this short space of time a huge amount has happened.

As some of you are aware, I have now relocated from Yarra Junction to Yarra Glen where I am currently leasing a shed from Sticks. I have filled this space with my equipment and wine and will call it home for at least another 12 months while I look for something more permanent.

I have also filled my first export orders to Dubai and London where I have now achieved some exciting listings in many 3 and 2 star Michelin restaurants in London. Sales have been solid with new orders being placed in September. It is a real relief that others feel the wines are drinking and showing as well as I feel they are. I have had some fantastic feedback from the trade and press.

Right now, I am launching the first 3 wines of the Yarra Valley range. This will be complimented by the remainder of the range and the new Victorian Range release in November. Both of the Sub-regional Chardonnay's and the Yarra Valley Pinot are available. However, I cannot convey my excitement over the full portfolio release in November.

On a separate note, it is with sadness that I wish to acknowledge John Middleton who passed away last month (July) at the age of 78. John was a major figure head in both the Yarra wine industry as well as the Australian industry in terms of remaining true to his ideals of restraint and refinement when most producers over the past 20 years have chased big alcoholic styles. Having been fortunate to work with many influential people in the industry both here and abroad, John was a mentor for me from my days at uni through to my time at Mount Mary. Today, many of John's ideals still stay with me. I most vividly remember John for his time and willingness to share his thoughts. Occasionally I would call John from uni when he still thought my name was Max. Names aside, these conversations were insightful, challenging and educational and ensured I never got brainwashed into warm climate philosophies. John leaves Mount Mary in capable hands with his family and the production team.
